New babies. Family emergencies. Moving house.
All things that can throw your business into chaos – if you let them.
Fortunately, if you’re going through one of these crazy times, you have options to simplify business and life, so you don’t get overwhelmed.
If you know that a crazy time is coming up (say you’re pregnant like I am), then you can do some preparatory work. Plan to take a few days or weeks off if you need to.
Schedule whatever you can ahead of time. Blog posts, newsletters, social media – these are things you can set and forget. It’ll make it look like it’s still business as usual, even though behind the scenes may be a mess!
If you’ve had something hit you unexpectedly, don’t panic. You’ve still got options.
How to simplify business during crazy times
First, decide what’s most important. Are you an online retailer? Then you’ll want to prioritise things like packing and posting orders.
A business coach? Appointments with clients would be at the top of your list.
Graphic designer, virtual assistant, or copywriter? Work for your clients is probably most important.
The idea here is that your first priority tasks will be the things that directly make you money. Blogging, sending newsletters, and posting to social media are great, but they can wait till you’re not as busy.
Next, identify tasks that still need to be done, regardless of how busy you are. Bookkeeping is a good example of this!
If you can afford it, this might be the time to enlist the help of a virtual assistant. You can send them all the work that still needs to be done, but you don’t have time for.
Once you’ve got your priorities sorted out, you’ll want to work out when you can do your work. Sometimes – such as when you’ve just had a baby – this isn’t predictable. So you might have to go through some trial and error to see what works best.
Try to find a time of day when you can do your work – while the kids are at school, while the baby naps, or whatever time fits into your day. If you can’t schedule it because everything is too hectic, then do what you can, when you can.
The key here is to make things easier on yourself. So whatever helps you in that quest, do it! Even if it’s a little unconventional or sounds totally crazy, if it works for you, that’s the important thing.
